Step 1 Place basil, garlic, parmesan, lemon zest, sunflower seeds and pepitas into a food processor and pulse until roughly chopped. With the motor running, gradually add oil and 1/4 cup water until well combined (and has a thick consistency).
What we did
This makeover was created especially for nut-allergy sufferers, thanks to reader requests. Even though the main aim was to make an allergy-friendly alternative, our version still achieves a modest reduction in kJ, fat and sodium. Since there are no commercial nut-free pestos available, we compared our version to a popular brand that contains nuts.
