It’s that time of year again! We share a sneak peek at the winners in nutrition and taste!
We all know what it feels like to walk up and down the bread or cereal aisle of a supermarket and feel slightly overwhelmed by the vast array of options on offer. Multigrain, wholegrain, wholemeal, wheat-free, gluten-free, low-FODMAP... it’s really no surprise that we receive regular questions on which products to buy!
Enticing nutrition claims, eye-catching packaging and clever marketing make shopping both confusing and time-consuming. So, we’ve done the hard work for you! To help you make the best choices, we created the Healthy Food Awards. Read on to discover just how we picked the best – and don’t forget to pick up the November issue of Healthy Food Guide magazine to find out all of the winners (sneak peek below)!
The expert opinion
Our judging panel consists of four dietitians and leaders in the health and nutrition space, so you can be assured that the winners and finalists truly deserve a place in your shopping trolley. Joining the HFG team of dietitians again this year is leading media dietitian, Joanna McMillan, and popular author, Catherine Saxelby. Together, they have years of experience with food labels, ingredient lists and on-pack nutrition information.
The judging process
Determining our winners was a three-step process. We selected 10 major food categories, from breakfast cereal to ready-made meals, and asked food manufactures and our readers to enter their favourite brands. Our team of dietitians also scoured the supermarket, looking for the healthiest products.
After collating the results, we selected our finalists based on nutritional merit. The top six contenders in each category were all put up for consideration for the winner’s title.
Our expert judging panel closely analysed the nutrition profiles of each of the top six contenders in each category, taking into account everything from portion size to innovation to saturated fat, sugar, sodium, fibre and kilojoule content. Once we’d taken everything into consideration, we crowned the winners.
Plus, for the very first time, we gave you – our valued readers – the power to vote for your favourite products in our Readers’ Choice Awards! We think taste is a big part of healthy eating (forcing yourself to munch on bland, tasteless food every day just isn’t good for you!) so we wanted to know which of our finalists are were your favourites at home!
