Ever wondered what a team of dietitians and foodies eat for lunch at work every day? Well, sorry to disappoint, but most days it’s leafy salads with an array of tasty toppings, from toasted nuts and roasted veg to marinated feta (my favourite). However, I’ll admit that our team is the first to run to the kitchen when cake is on offer … it’s all about balance, right?
One thing we do find tricky is sitting at a desk all day. Around 80 per cent of Aussie workers have to do some sitting at work, so we’re not alone. For this reason, we take regular stand-and-stretch breaks, and it’s not uncommon to find one of us running up and down the stairwell to get the oxygen pumping!
Recognising that many of us spend a significant chunk of our time at work, we’ve put together a guide to help you stay healthy at work. My top three tips are:
Step outside at lunch.
If you’re among the one in 10 Aussies who regularly skip their lunch break, consider this: taking a lunch break reduces stress levels and increases afternoon energy levels. Use some of your break to walk outside in the fresh air and sunshine
It’s easier to stay motivated for your lunchtime exercises, or make healthy lunch choices, when you’re doing things as a team.
One of the best ways to get in extra steps is to take hourly trips to the kitchen or water cooler to fill your glass or drink bottle. Plus, you’ll get in a few more steps walking to the loo!
