You’ve got a lot on your plate this yuletide season — and it’s all good for you!
You know it’s summer when party platters come out to play! From extravagant cheese boards to tropical fresh fruit displays, there’s something so festive about sharing around an abundance of food.
But before you reach for a box of Jatz crackers and cabanossi sticks, check out our top tips for creating a tasty, health-filled platter that is as good for you as it looks.
“A healthy grazing platter needs two key things — freshness and abundance,” says HFG dietitian Melissa Meier. “You would be surprised how easily people bond over food — it’s such a great conversation starter! Platters are also much easier for the host, because you can set everything up before the guests arrive, and afterwards you only have one big board to wipe down.”
Use these five tips to create your very own work of art:
Shop in season
Now is the time to splurge a little on quality seasonal produce such as figs, berries, grapes and stone fruit.
Add some crunch
Wholegrain crackers add crunch, but so do carrots, cucumbers and radish.
Vegetables are also a great vehicle for healthy dips like hoummos and guacamole.
Keep everything small and easy to eat. Thread veg and cheese onto skewers and fill the gaps with dried fruit and nuts.
Cut fresh produce into interesting shapes, and have fun with edible props like a fresh coconut carved into a bowl!
