3 dietitian-approved picks at the 2017 Melbourne Gluten Free Expo
Gone are the days where a coeliac disease diagnosis meant you missed out on your favourite foods.
The 2017 Gluten Free Expo, held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on October 7th and 8th has the largest selection of gluten-free food providers and food tricks. Here you’ll find everything from gluten-free beer to chocolate-filled doughnuts.
Among all of the fun food, we’ve found some nutritional winners! They’re definitely good for you, but how do they taste? Our team of dietitians put three healthy gluten-free products to the taste test, and the results might surprise you!
If you’re looking for a healthy and tasty lunch box snack kids will love, these are for you! Made from crunchy roasted broad beans, this savoury snack is far healthier than a packet of potato chips, with just enough ‘pizza’ flavour to make kids feel like their having a treat. We love that they are gluten and nut free, and contain over 2g of fibre per mini snack pack. Per 15g snack pack: 275kJ (65cal), 4g protein, 0.2g sat fat, 0.3g sugar, 2.2g fibre, 37mg sodium
Vegie chips are everywhere, but many are no better than regular potato crisps. Not these! Quinoa and chickpea flours bump up the fibre content to three times that of normal chips and these also have half the amount of unhealthy saturated fat. But watch out – they’re just as addictive as salty potato chips, so stick to a healthy 25g serve, and put the rest of the bag away! Per 25g serve (1/4 bag): 445kJ (106cal), 2.4g protein, 0.5g sat fat, 0.7g sugar, 2.6g fibre, 136mg sodium
Let’s be honest – there’s people who love dried fruit in their muesli and those who don’t. This crunchy, gluten-free muesli will appeal to the latter. Unlike many toasted mueslis that are loaded with sugar and saturated fat, this one ticks the health boxes with less than 5g sugar per serve, and healthy fats from whole nuts and seeds. And, it tastes great! Per 35g serve: 652kJ (156cal), 3.9g protein, 0.8g sat fat, 3.6g sugar, 2.1g fibre, 34mg sodium
