Q: “Is sparkling water unhealthy? Does it contain carbonate? Is it acceptable for a child who doesn’t drink tap water?”

A: APD Jemma O’Hanlon responds:
“Sparkling water is made by dissolving carbon dioxide in water and has no ill health effects. Carbonate, on the other hand, is a completely different substance that is not found in sparkling water. Sparkling water is a healthier alternative to soft drinks as it doesn’t contain the sugar, colours and empty kilojoules that soft drinks often contain. However, like soft drinks, sparkling water is acidic, meaning it can contribute to tooth decay if drunk frequently. So with your child’s nutritional and dental health in mind, tap water is the preferred choice, and to mix it up, a glass of reduced-fat milk or flavoured milk.”
