“Bacon is prepared by curing pork with salt and other preservatives. In different parts of the world, beef, lamb, chicken, goat or turkey are sometimes cured in the same way as alternatives to bacon. You can probably find beef or turkey bacon in halal or kosher delis or the kosher section of your supermarket (if it has one). If you are looking for meatless bacon (or ‘facon’), try Sanitarium’s soy-based ‘Vegie Delights Bacon Style Rashers’. You’ll find them in the chilled section, near the tofu products.
Remember to use bacon and other cured meats sparingly, as it’s high in salt and saturated fat. To reduce the saturated fat content, trim it or buy shortcut bacon products. Cured meats also contain nitrates, which have been shown to increase the risk of various cancers – luckily, Sanitarium’s option does not contain nitrates.”
