Q: "How important is it to detox? I was under the impression that it’s a fad diet, but I’m hearing about it more and more.”

A: Gastroenterologist David Lloyd writes:
“Most people overindulge every once in a while, and generally the body is very good at getting rid of any toxins that may result – that is one of the main roles of the liver and kidneys.
However, it’s a good idea to give your body a break every once in a while. You don’t need special teas or crazy concoctions to detox. The best ‘detox diet’ is one that includes plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits, and cuts out alcohol and excessive amounts of caffeine.
Thus far, science hasn’t found evidence of any specific foods having any magical detox properties. While limiting the amount of processed foods you consume, there is no need to exclude large numbers of foods from your diet – this could result in harmful nutrient deficiencies. The best advice is to avoid fad diets and eat healthily.”
