“Canned vegetables are a great way to boost your daily vegie intake when you’re short on time, but you’re right – they tend to be quite high in sodium. This is because salt is added during the canning process to preserve the food.
Rinsing them does lower the salt content, as most of it will be washed away with the brine. Better still, look out for the ‘low’ or ‘reduced’ salt options of your favourite canned foods. Some products may not have a flash across the front, but you can compare products for yourself by checking the sodium figures in the ‘per 100g’ column of the nutrition information panel. Alternatively, try frozen vegies – a quick, easy alternative that’s virtually free of added salt.”
