Crackers are great for snacks at home or easy entertaining, especially if they’re low in kilojoules, fat and sodium. But they can be used for so much more than cheese platters!
1. Sneaky sandwiches
Crackers are a fantastic substitute for fussy kids who don’t like sandwiches. Vegemite, peanut butter or cheese on large crackers (like Salada, Vita-Weat and crispbreads) are always a winner. Don’t be afraid to try new fillings, such as hommous, ham, tuna, avocado or salad.
2. Mix it up
Make your own homemade trail mix by combining different types of unsalted nuts, dried fruit and your choice of flavoured crackers (broken into quarters). A perfect snack-to-go.
3. Convenient crumbs
Why wait for bread to go stale? Roughly break crackers and crush in a food processor; or place in a zip-lock bag (make sure there is no air in the bag) and use a rolling pin to create crumbs. Great for stuffing, schnitzel or meatloaf.
4. Bruschetta bits
Try a different type of bruschetta using pepper- or herb-flavoured crackers. Combine chopped tomatoes, red onion, chopped basil and a small splash of red wine vinegar. Rub each side of the crackers with garlic and top with tomato mixture. It’s that easy!
5. Simply soup
Add bulk and texture by crumbling crackers into your soup. Plain crackers are usually the best choice, but try using herb-flavoured crackers in simple soups, such as tomato or vegetable soup.
6. Crunchy pasta bake
Add some crunch to your next pasta bake. Crumble crackers and sprinkle them, along with grated parmesan cheese, on top of the pasta before baking.
Use plain or flavoured rice crackers instead of corn chips to make your favourite nachos recipes for a healthier Mexican feast.
8. Tiny pizzas
These adorable mini pizzas are a crunchy alternative to the real thing. Spread tomato paste on crackers, followed by a mixture of chopped tomatoes, basil and a dash of olive oil. Top with low-fat shredded mozzarella cheese and grill until the cheese melts.
9. Cracker croutons
Create a Caesar salad with crunch by combining lettuce leaves, chopped boiled egg, crispy bacon bits, shaved Parmesan cheese and crumbled wholegrain crackers. Dress with reduced-fat Caesar salad dressing.
10. Mini cheeseburgers
A bite-sized treat! Use your favourite hamburger patty recipe to make cracker-sized patties. Top sesame seed crackers with patties, cheese, lettuce and sliced cherry tomatoes. Serve with salad.
