Q: "I’ve heard chemicals can leach from water bottles into the water and cause cancer. Is this true?"
Betty, Perth, WA
A: Registered nutritionist Rose Carr responds:
“No. Some reports have suggested that an ingredient used to make plastic, DEHA, can leach from soft-drink bottles into the fluid inside – especially when the bottle is being reused. But most plastic bottles in Australia are made from PET plastic, which doesn’t contain DEHA. (Check the bottle if you’re not sure.) Current research indicates that no chemicals are released into water when a bottle is reused, but plastic bottles aren’t made to be reused, so to be safe, I recommend avoiding the reuse of warped or damaged bottles.”
