Q: "What are the best foods to help prevent the occurrence of prostate cancer?"
John Joyce, via emailA: HFG editorial advisor and Associate Professor in Human Nutrition Tim Crowe says:
“Nearly 20,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, so it’s incredibly important that men look after the health of their prostate and visit their doctor annually. To help reduce your risk, stay at a healthy body weight and eat plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and legumes. The World Cancer Research Fund also reports that the antioxidant lycopene – found in tomatoes and tomato-based products – may decrease your risk. On the flipside, there have been several reports linking processed meats, and a diet high in animal fats and proteins, with an increased risk of prostate cancer, so eat these in moderation. And don’t focus too much on taking vitamin E or selenium supplements for prostate cancer prevention – despite the hype, recent studies have not shown any benefit to when it comes to this.”
