Don't store food in opened cans

Leaving food in opened cans can be hazardous for your health.

When foods such as fruit, fruit juices and tomato products are stored in an open metallic can, tin and iron will dissolve from the can walls and food may take on a metallic taste. Food with high concentrations of tin can cause nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps, bloating, fever or headaches. These symptoms do pass quickly, however, and there don’t seem to be any long-term effects of high tin exposure. But it’s still a good idea to put the remainder of opened-can food in a clean plastic or glass container, and keep it covered and stored in the fridge. If you come across any food in a can with an odd colour or odour, don’t taste it – throw the food away.
