Freestyle Cooking is a pioneering approach to meal preparation that has been gathering steam internationally.

It is being introduced to New Zealand by Gregg’s, who say Freestyle Cooking is about learning to trust your own taste buds and not having to rely on recipes to create dishes full of flavour.

Freestyle Cooking is based on these simple steps:

  1. Start with flavour. What taste adventure do you want to go on tonight? Check out what herbs, spices or seasonings you have in the pantry.

  2. What’s my base? Meat, fish, vegetables, pulses? Grab whatever is ready to cook.

  3. What’s my carb? Rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, pastry?

  4. Start cooking and be daring. Trust your taste buds, Remember to taste, taste it, taste it and taste it again until delicious.

To introduce Freestyle Cooking to New Zealand, Gregg's has enlisted the expert skills of Alison Robert. Alison has been a chef for over 16 years and an advocate of “free-hand cooking, kitchen improvisation and putting personality into your dishes” at Main Course, her cooking school in Auckland.

Alison says “Sometimes recipes can be daunting, and who really has the time to traipse all over town looking for obscure ingredients? Freestyle Cooking is about breaking out of the rut of cooking your tired old recipes and experimenting in the kitchen using ingredients you’ve already got.”

Gregg’s hope that Freestyle Cooking will help us all view cooking as an adventure rather than a chore.  For more information go to www.cookfreestyle.co.nz
