Walking, the most common form of exercise in older adults, can help prevent memory loss, according to results from the US Nurse’s Health Study.

The researchers found the more women walked during their late ’50s and ’60s, the better their memory was at age 70 and older. Those who walked at least 90 minutes a week had cognitive function similar to that of women 1½  years younger. Although researchers don’t really know why, small clinical trials show similar results. A possible explanation is that exercise helps maintain a steady flow of blood to the brain.
