In the garden: July

Here's what to do in your edible garden in July.

Plant now

Artichokes, cauliflower, lettuce, onions, rhubarb, silver beet and cabbage seedlings. Keep planting salad greens for a year-round supply. In warmer places, potatoes can be planted. In colder areas, cover small seedlings with a cloth canopy to protect from frost.

Harvest now

Salad greens, beetroot, carrots, rhubarb, silver beet and spinach. Lemons and other citrus fruits will be ripe now, too.

Other jobs

  • Get beds ready for planting spring crops by adding compost.
  • Start sowing seeds now for planting over the next couple of months.
  • Prune fruit trees.

HFG TIP
Keep slugs and snails at bay naturally with beer - just put a dish of it near your tender seedlings. Snails and slugs love it, so they'll attack the beer instead of your plants
