$3m worth of fruit and vege wasted weekly by NZ families
Research company Colmar Brunton was commissioned by Frucor Beverages to investigate the fruit and vegetable eating habits of both adults and children throughout NZ.
They found Kiwi households spend on average $34 a week on fruit and vegetables. But families are throwing away up to 30% of the fresh produce they buy each week; amounting to $3 million across the country.
While most understand the importance of eating fruit and vegetables every day, a quarter of adults and a third of the kids confess they don’t eat the recommended amount. Under 35s are the worst offenders, with only 16% saying they always eat their 5+ a day compared to the national average of almost 31%.
