UK supermarkets lead the ethical charge

Issues of sustainability are becoming more and more important to UK shoppers – and their supermarkets are taking note and making changes.

Giant chain Tesco recently announced it plans to include labelling on its products for food miles – the distance food has travelled to reach the store – as well as 'embodied energy' – the amount of energy involved in the total production of the product.

Marks and Spencers has also announced a $600 million eco-plan, including a change to sustainable packaging.

The 100-point plan includes reducing the use of packaging by 25%, switching to renewable sources of packaging, and working more closely with British farmers to reduce the amount of food that needs to be imported, saving on food miles.
