USA schools on wellness path
The implementation of nutritional policies throughout the USA has resulted in significant changes in providing children with healthier foods and beverages, according to a new report.
The programme is designed to address the problem of childhood obesity with schools setting new guidelines in food nutrition.
Although the policy is not regulated and is likely to differ from school to school, the initiative is being well implemented. Changes to school lunches included offering fruits, vegetables and whole grain foods and baked instead of deep-fried foods. In 38% of school districts, vending machines no longer dispense carbonated drinks – this is up from 18% a year ago.
The school districts also reported a greater focus on wellness issues, including nutritional information and student education.
