Adding flavour to dishes is only one reason to use herbs in cooking since they may also offer protection against heart disease and certain cancers.

A review published in the Medical Journal of Australia highlights the antioxidant properties of herbs and spices.

Herbs particularly high in antioxidants are rosemary, sage, oregano and marjoram. So, for improved health add some of these to your everyday meals like salads or a pizza topping. Cloves also are shown to have a high antioxidant content and these could be added to fruit dishes like compotes.

The reviewers noted that herbs and spices can replace some less desirable ingredients like salt, sugar and fats.
