Three cups of coffee a day could slow the loss of mental function in older men, says a European study.

Results appear in line with growing evidence linking coffee consumption to improved cognitive function. It follows a recent report from Austria that showed how caffeine boosts brain function through its effects on distinct areas of the brain.

Mental performance declines naturally with age but the results from the study showed that men who drank coffee daily over a 10-year period had a lower rate of decline than those who did not drink coffee.
