Researchers are finding that components found in red wine can help in preventing and treating inflammatory gum diseases.

About 15% of adults between 21-50 and 65% of adults over 50 are affected by this disease.

Scientists from Université Laval have found that the compounds in red wine known as polyphenols have an anti-inflammatory effect and could be useful in the prevention and treatment of inflammatory periodontal diseases, as well as other disorders involving free radicals.

Previous studies have suggested that the polyphenols in red wine may help to cut inflammation, and possibly the risk of both cancer and heart disease.
